J. Betancourt Meets Death In Olinawa Fight

Pvt. John Francis Betancourt Jr., USMC, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kronmiller, 1417 South 45th street, was killed in action on Okinawa, April 4, according to word received from the navy department. He would have been 21 years old April 26.
Pvt. Betancourt entered the military service June 15, 1944, and went overseas in December. He trained for a time in the Solomon islands before engaging in the Okinawa invasion.
Bob Baubnash, Betancourt's buddy, wrote to Mr. and Mrs. Kronmiller that their son was killed when a party of marines was surprised in ambush by Jap soldiers. This occurred on the fourth day after landing.
Pvt. Betancourt was born in Tacoma and attended public schools and Bellarmine high school, where he was a corporal in the ROTC.
Besides his parents he is survived by a stepbrother, Rodney Kronmiller: grandmother Mrs. Caroline Zeyen, and aunt Mrs. Joseph Hazuka, all of Tacoma He was a former carrier of The News Tribune.
