Death Location, Note 1:: "In Normandy France" is based on the best information available at this time. In the case of PVT Way, this location was estimated on:

A. His Application For Headstone or Marker, OQMG Form 623, identifies his assigned unit as the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division and date of death as June 11, 1944.

B. At the time PVT Way Died of Wounds, the 1st Infantry Division was conducting combat operations in Normandy France just after D-Day, June 6, 1944.

C. His Hospital Admission Records clearly indicate that PVT Harland Way survived his initial wounds, then died on June 11, 1944. With the significant extent of his wounds and without any record of surgery would likely indicate that he had died soon after reaching the initial aid station or field hospital.

D. Further information on the history and service of the 16th Infantry Regiment and the 1st Infantry Division can be found at the US Army History websites 16th Infantry Regiment, and 1st Infantry Division.
