Son of Eugene Kirby and Ruth Douglas Kirby.

He was inducted into the US Army from Adams County, Washington,
Enlisting in Spokane on March 16, 1943.

His loss is recorded in the
Washington World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing, page 1, Adams County,
published by the War Department in June 1946.

Note 1: The death location, "In Southern Germany" is based on the best information available at this time. In the case of TEC5 Kirby , this location was estimated on:

A. The American Battle Monuments Commission website identifies his assigned unit as the 220th Field Artillery Battalion, 44th Infantry Division.

B. At the time TEC5 Kirby Died of Wounds the 44th Infantry Division was conducting combat operations in Southern Germany near the city of Ehingen during April 1945.

C. WWII Hospital Admission Records indicate that TEC5 Kirby was admitted on or after April 1, 1945 and died on April 18, 1945 as the result of wounds received from artillery shell fragments in the abdomen, pelvis and back. Note that in the absence of an exact date he was wounded, a potential span of up to 18 days would make it possible that he may have been evacuated to a rear area medical unit in Germany or France.
