European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal Awarded for military service for service within the European-African-MiddleEastern Theater between December 7, 1941 and November 8, 1945.
World War II Victory Medal Awarded for military service between December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946, both dates inclusive.
PVT McCain was born in Winston County, Alabama on August 2, 1919, to
William Foster McCain and Olive L. McAdams McCain.
He entered the US Army from Winston County,
Alabama, Enlisting at Fort McClellan Alabama on June 20, 1941.
His loss is recorded in the
Alabama World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing,
page 27, Winston County,
published by the War Department in June 1946.
His name is listed on the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) website.
Note 1: The death location, "In North Africa" is based on the best information available at this time. In the case of PVT McCain, this location was not verified by eyewitness statement or official After Action Report.
Rescarching multiple online sources, this location was estimated based on following sources:
A. The general location of his unit, the 156th Infantry Regiment, on June 29, 1943, was performing guard duties at rear Headquarters and POW camps in North Africa.
B. An entry on the Find A Grave website for his Alabama Memorial Marker that states: "...died in the line of duty from some illness or accident on 28 June 1943."
C. The Date of death on the Find A Grave website for his Alabama Memorial Marker has his date of death as 29 June 1943 but the ABMC Date of Death is listed as 28 Jun 1943.
D. An entry for another Winston County Alabama soldier, PFC John M. Chambers, also from the 156th Infantry Regiment and died on June 29, 1943, states that
PFC John Chambers was "Killed in Africa in World War II when a train he and other soldiers were on collided with a train of ammunition".
E. While it is possible that PVT Armos McCain died in the above train accident, there are no specific records available at this time that confirms or contradicts this theory.
