Freed From Job In German Quarry, G.I. Comes Home

Liberated April 29 (1945) while working in a stone quarry near Mooseburg, Germany, Pvt. George Janosik, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Janosik of 415 High St., has arrived home on a 60-day furlough.

Pvt. Janosik, who served with the infantry in the 30th Division of the 1st Army, was on a scouting mission when he and a group of 20 other soldiers were captured Oct. 4 (1944) during a counter-atack. They were listed as prisoners of the Germans in January.

Janosik said that their liberation was not spectacular.

"The army came through, and we just quit working," he said. His group was flown from Manheim to France, and returned to this country by ship.

Since his liberation, the soldier has received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received the day he was caputured. He holds three battle stars, the infantryman's combat badge and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was overseas about 18 months.
