KIA - Killed in Action, by the enemy, or if a prisoner of war, whether by air bombardment of a prison camp or by being killed while attempting to escape.

DOW - Died of Wounds, Army personnel who were wounded in action and later died of those wounds.

DOI - Died of Injuries, Army personnel who suffered fatal battle injuries as opposed to wounds, in combat, or in combat areas, and died in a line-of-duty status.

DNB - Died Non-Battle, Army personnel who died in the line-of-duty, from sickness, homicide, suicide, or accidents outside combat areas. This would include deaths during training and maneuvers outside combat areas.

FOD - Finding of Death, in the absence of a recovered body, soldiers that were determined to be dead under Public Law 490. Made in cases, after at least one year from time of disappearance, when there was either conclusive proof that the person is dead or equally overwhelming evidence that the person could not have remained alive.

M - Missing, Army personnel declared missing for less than one year prior to the cutoff date of January 31, 1946. Missing status could later have been changed to Killed in Action or Finding of Death, depending on the outcome of the Army Search Team investigation.

 Army casualties listed under each state are so located due to any of the following reasons; A) The soldier gave a home address in that state. B) Designated a beneficiary, next-of-kin or emergency contact person located in that state. C) Was listed as being inducted by a Selective Service board in that state.

 In the case of certain Regular Army personnel who may have entered service from their state of residence, but later moved their homes to a different state as required by their service in the United States Army, and only listed their address as "The Adjutant General", these personnel are listed under the District of Columbia.  Unlike the Department of the Army, the US Navy only listed those men on active duty that died as a direct result of enemy action or from operational activities against the enemy in designated war zones from 7 December 1941 until the end of the war.

 Navy, USMC and Coast Guard non-combat deaths that occurred as a result of accident, homicide, suicide or disease were not included in the original listing published by the Department of the Navy in 1946.

 However, when available, names not included in the 1946 release have been added to this online list from other sources, primarily the American Battle Monuments Commission website. Designation of status and sources is detailed below.

KIA - Killed in Action, Died of Wounds, or Lost Lives as a Result of Operational Movements in War Zones as listed on the 1946 Navy list.

M - Missing in Action, or During Operational War Missions and listed on the 1946 Navy list.

ABMC - Department of the Navy Personnel listed on the American Battle Monuments Commission that are buried in American WWII Military Cemeteries.

ABMC-M - Department of the Navy Personnel listed as Missing in Action or Buried at Sea and are their names are engraved on Missing Tablets at American Cemeteries world-wide.

POW - Department of the Navy Personnel who died or were killed in Prisoner of War Status as identified on the 1946 Navy list.

 Inclusion of names in each state group are from the original Navy Honor Rolls published in 1946 had been determined solely by the residence of next-of-kin at the time of notification of the last wartime casualty status. These listing do not necessarily represent their State of birth, legal residence, or official State credit according to service enlistment. See Full Text Here
