D. U.S. Navy records report that S1C John F. Smith, Service #6044217, was assigned to the SS Puerto Rican as an armed guard in convoy RA 53. His assigned ship was hit by one torpedo from the German submarine U-586 about 100 miles Northeast of Iceland.
