World War II Victory Medal Awarded for military service between December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946, both dates inclusive.

PFC Luther Gilbert was born May 28, 1926 , son of Norman E. and Betty E. Gilbert
He was inducted into the US Army from Wilcox County, Enlisting at Fort McClellan on September 29, 1944.

His loss is recorded in the
Alabama World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing, page 26, Wilcox County,
published by the War Department in June 1946.

His name is not listed on the American Battle Monuments Commission website.

KILLED IN GERMANY - Pvt. Luther H. Gilbert (photo above), was killed in action in Germany April 23, (1945) his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Gilbert, Bay Minette, have been notified. He was a gunner with an infantry unit. He is survived by his parents and two brothers, John P. and Jesse D. Gilbert, both in the service.

A. The Find A Grave website data indicates his assigned unit was the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, date of birth as May 28, 1926 and date of death on April 23, 1945.

B. The location of his unit, the 9th Infantry Division, was advancing through Western Germany in an area between Cologne and Frankfurt during April 1945.

C. A local newspaper, on June 21, 1945, included a photo of PFC Gilbert and reported that he "...was killed in action in Germany April 23...".
