Airman's Medal

The Airman's Medal was created by an act of congress and is awarded to members of the United States Air Force who distinguished themselves by heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy.

Criteria: The Airman's Medal may be awarded to any persons who, while serving in any capacity with the United States Air Force, distinguish themselves by heroism involving voluntary risk of personal hazard or danger under conditions other than those of actual conflict with an enemy. This award takes the place of the Army Soldier's Medal for Air Force Personnel. The basis for the Airman's Medal is the legislation authorizing the Soldier's Medal, July 2, 1926, as amended July 6, 1960. It was specifically authorized for the Air Force through enactment of Section 8750 of title 10, U.S.C. The saving of a life or the success of the voluntary heroic act is not essential.
Prior to the Creation of the Airman's Medal, Air Force Members were awarded the U.S. Army Soldier's Medal.

Description: The Medal has a bronze medal disk with an oxidized satin finish. The pendant bears a representation of Hermes, son of Zeus, releasing an American Bald Eagle.
The ribbon is brittany blue displaying alternately, in the center, 13 vertical stripes of the Air Force colors, yellow and ultramarine.

Category of Award: Personal Performance Award
